Group Therapy

Group Therapy (usually between 6-12 members) aims at the group’s interaction in the “here and now” giving the opportunity to explore in a safe context, the individual’s self (intra-psychic level), the individual’s relationship with the other members (inter-personal level) and the individual’s relationship with the group as a whole (group as a whole level).

Group therapy sessions last 90 minutes and are usually facilitated by two group therapists. The interpersonal model of group therapy that is applied has been developed by Irvin Yalom (USA), Professor of Psychiatry, Existential Psychotherapist, Group Psychotherapist and Writer and it is considered to be the most recognized contemporary model of group psychotherapy in America.

Group Therapy has multiple efficacies for group members according to Yalom (2006) - the provision of hope, the development of a sense of belongingness, the exchange of perspectives and information, altruistic offering, corrective reconstitution of the primary group of family origin, modelling and socialization.
